Financial Assistance

The School of Music offers the following financial aid opportunities to students studying organ performance. Interested students should complete an online application or contact Dr. Faythe Freese, ffreese@ua.edu, for more information.

Scholarships

The School of Music awards these scholarships based on performing and creative talent:

  • Gladys Ahrenholz Organ Scholarship
  • Warren Hutton Organ Scholarship
  • Organ Scholarship Competition

Students who audition for admission will be automatically considered for all available music scholarships. Admission to The University of Alabama must be granted before a scholarship can be awarded

Awards are restricted to students enrolled as music majors in the BM or BS degree programs. Students in the School’s BA programs are not eligible for School of Music scholarships. Awards may carry up to the amount of full tuition. As per University policy, the amount of a music scholarship may be reduced should a student receive other scholarship awards from The University of Alabama.

Graduate Assistantships

  • .25 Graduate Teaching Assistantships covers half tuition and a monthly stipend of $750 for 9 months for an organ major at The University of Alabama.

Fellowships

HENDERSON ORGAN FELLOWSHIP/INTERNSHIP – Grace Presbyterian Church, Tuscaloosa, AL Must be a graduate organ major at the University of AlabamaThe William B. Henderson Organ Fellowship/Internship is designed to train the UA organ student recipient in organ and church music skills. The fellowship is based on an annual appointment, and the recipient will serve as organist for the duration of the fellowship.

Part-time: 6-7 hours per week

JOB DESCRIPTION: The organist intern will assist the Director of Music and the Pastor in the music ministry of the church. The duties include, but are not limited to: playing Sunday morning worship services, weddings/funerals; accompanying choirs; and maintaining the church music library.

COMPENSATION:

  • 1. Beginning salary is $12,000; negotiable based on experience
  • 2. Housing compensation is $3,900
  • 3. Four (4) paid vacation Sundays per year

ORGAN: Casavant, two manual with 45 ranks. It was originally built 1970 and was extensively rebuilt in 2011.

CHURCH: Grace Presbyterian, PC(USA), follows the liturgical calendar, sings from the Glory to God hymnal, receives weekly communion, engages in local acts of social justice, and is intentionally inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community.
